At Gracious Steps School, we believe every child deserves that opportunity.
Established in January 2008 following the post-election violence, Gracious Steps was created to respond to the growing need for accessible education among children in Riruta and the surrounding community. Many families in the area faced significant financial challenges and struggled to afford the fees charged by nearby schools.
What began as a response to a difficult period has grown into a school serving 539 pupils from preschool through Grade 6.
Education That Opens Doors

At Gracious Steps, our goal is not only to help children acquire academic knowledge but also to develop the skills, discipline, confidence, and values they need to navigate the future.
Our teachers work every day to create an environment where learners can participate, ask questions, develop their abilities, and discover what they are capable of achieving.
For children growing up in financially challenging circumstances, having access to consistent education can be an important step towards greater opportunities.
Supporting Children From Different Circumstances
Our learners come from a wide range of family backgrounds.
Some come from low-income households. Others are raised by single parents or guardians, while some are orphans or face other difficult circumstances.
For these families, meeting the costs associated with education can be challenging.
At Gracious Steps, we believe that a family’s financial situation should not determine whether a child gets the opportunity to learn.
This is why support from donors, partners, and well-wishers is so important.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
A child’s ability to learn is affected by more than what happens during a lesson.
At Gracious Steps, the school provides breakfast and lunch to pupils and staff, helping support the wellbeing of learners throughout the school day.
We also recognise the need for adequate learning materials, improved facilities, sufficient classroom space, and access to digital literacy resources.
These are areas where continued support can help us create better learning experiences for our children.
Teachers Make the Difference
Behind every learner is a teacher who chooses to invest time, knowledge, and patience into their development.
Gracious Steps currently has 20 dedicated teachers, supported by four subordinate staff members.
Our teachers play an important role in helping children develop academically while also encouraging discipline, responsibility, and positive values.
Supporting education therefore means supporting the people who make learning possible.
Education Can Continue Beyond Gracious Steps
The impact of education can extend far beyond the years a child spends at primary school.
We are proud of former learners who have continued their education and pursued opportunities beyond Gracious Steps. Some alumni have gone on to access secondary school opportunities through programmes such as the Equity Wings to Fly Scholarship Programme, while others have received support towards further and higher education.
These journeys demonstrate why it is important to give children a strong educational foundation and the encouragement to continue pursuing their goals.
A child sitting in a classroom today may become tomorrow’s teacher, doctor, engineer, entrepreneur, developer, leader, or professional.
