From Crisis to Hope. From Hope to Opportunity.
Gracious Steps School was established in January 2008, following Kenya’s post-election violence, to provide children in Riruta and the surrounding community with access to education. What began as a response to a difficult time has grown into a place where hundreds of children can learn, grow, and pursue a brighter future.
Our Beginning
A School Born From a Need
Gracious Steps School was established in January 2008 following the post-election violence, at a time when many families were facing uncertainty and financial hardship.
As the number of children in Riruta and its surrounding areas continued to grow, there was a clear need for accessible education. Many parents were low-income earners and could not easily afford the costs of other schools.
Gracious Steps was established to give these children an opportunity to continue learning, regardless of their family’s circumstances.

How Far We Have Come
Growing One Step at a Time
What started as a response to an urgent community need has grown into a school serving 539 pupils from preschool through Grade 6.
Today, Gracious Steps continues to provide accessible education to children from different family backgrounds, including low-income households, single-parent families, orphaned children, and families facing financial hardship.
With 20 dedicated teachers and 4 support staff, we continue working every day to provide children with education, care, guidance, and opportunities to grow.

More Than Education
Supporting the Whole Child
At Gracious Steps, we understand that a child cannot fully focus on learning when basic needs remain unmet.
That is why the school provides breakfast and lunch to both pupils and staff while continuing to support learners with education, guidance, discipline, and opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills.
Our work is about helping children take meaningful steps towards a better future.
We continue working towards improved learning materials, better facilities, additional classroom space, and digital literacy opportunities that can prepare our learners for the world ahead.
Beyond Gracious Steps
Giving Dreams Room to Grow
Our story does not end when a learner completes their education at Gracious Steps School.
We are proud of the learners who have continued to secondary school and beyond. Through support, guidance, and opportunities, some of our former students have accessed programmes such as Equity’s Wings to Fly scholarship programme, helping them continue their educational journeys into high school.
Other learners have also received support that has enabled them to pursue further and higher education.
These journeys remind us why every opportunity matters.
A child’s first classroom can become the first step towards a scholarship. A scholarship can open the door to further education. And further education can open possibilities that once seemed out of reach.
